Dear Parents and Carers,
What a wonderful assembly we enjoyed this morning! At the time of writing, the Wilston State School Community has raised almost $30,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation. What an achievement! Thank you everyone who has made a contribution to this total, and especially to the students and families, for getting involved. Of course, a massive shout out to Beth Cooper for organising the event and to our PE Teacher, Mr Rod Bell, for being such a good sport and having his hair shaved!
Of course, this assembly was our last assembly for term and it is now time for our students and staff to enjoy a well-earned break. We appreciate all the support our families give to our school during each term, so thank you all. Wishing our school community a safe, peaceful and happy break. The Easter Weekend falls at the end of the holidays, so school resumes on Tuesday 22 April. A reminder that Friday 25 April is the ANZAC public holiday. Our school ANZAC service will be on Wednesday 23 April, with the rescheduled cross country carnival on 24 April. Let’s hope for some drier weather over the holidays!
Warm regards, and take care Wilston.
Michael Sawbridge
Principal
If a picture can paint a thousand words, then let these inspirational pictures paint thousands more.
When 29 students walked through the door to participate in the World’s Greatest Shave, we had no idea just how far they would go in their fundraising efforts for this event. Just when you thought 29 students was incredible, waiting in the wings was our surprise teacher shave in the form of Mr. Bell. Each member of our Wilston State School team had a personal story to share that influenced and inspired them to sign up. Individually, they have gone above and beyond as they jumped aboard their fundraising journey but collectively, they have soared to new heights.
Thank you to each and every participant for your determination, bravery and selflessness when raising awareness of the World’s Greatest Shave and the Leukaemia Foundation. I’m sure this is a moment in your life that you will never forget – we certainly won’t.
Thank you to the Wilston community for supporting the fundraising event and any contributions great or small – every little bit helps.
Our collective fundraising amount continues to grow, however the current total stands at $29, 015.
Our fundraising efforts see us as the No 1 primary school in Australia and 7th out of 300 schools in Queensland.
If you would like to donate, please click on the link below:
Once again, thank you and congratulations Wilston.

PARENTS AS PARTNERS - READING IN PREP
Parents as Partners: Reading in Prep
We are thrilled to share the exciting and impactful learning taking place in our Prep classrooms, particularly in the area of reading instruction. As part of our commitment to delivering high-quality, evidence-based education, we would like to invite the Wilston community to learn more about our approach.
Reading is a key component of the Australian Curriculum and a crucial foundation for Literacy development. As students begin their reading journey in Prep, it’s important to understand that, contrary to earlier beliefs, reading is not a natural process—it requires explicit and systematic instruction.
At Wilston State School, we take great pride in our daily, structured approach to teaching reading. Our practice is carefully differentiated to meet the diverse needs of all learners, and it is grounded in the latest research from the Science of Reading.
We warmly invite Prep families to attend our Parents as Partners afternoon on Tuesday, 29 April from 4:30pm – 5:30pm. During this session, we will share how this research is shaping our new reading instruction model for 2025 Prep classes.
Highlights of the session include:
- Exploring the decodable texts our students use as they build foundational reading skills.
- Demonstrations of teaching strategies used to help students recognise letters by name and sound, and decode words to support reading fluency and comprehension.
- An explanation of how our reading materials is now sequenced based on the complexity of the alphabetic code, rather than traditional levelled books.
We will also share strategies you can use at home to support your child’s reading development, nurture a love of books, and reinforce the skills they’re learning in class.
If you are unable to attend, the session will be recorded and a link will be provided for you to watch at your convenience.
We look forward to partnering with you to support your child’s literacy journey!

We look forward to seeing you.
On Wednesday 23April at 9:00am, Wilston State School will commemorate ANZAC Day during our whole school assembly.
All students must wear formal uniform for the Anzac Day assembly.
Throughout the assembly, we will welcome our special guests, listen to compelling readings and enjoy poignant songs performed by our school choir.
As part of the ceremony, we would love for the significant red poppy to be displayed around the school. So, if you are looking for any holiday activities to keep your children occupied, we encourage you to click on the links below and make your own red poppy. On Tuesday 22April, your child will be given the opportunity to place their poppy on a poppy wall. The poppy will be pinned to the wall by an adult, therefore the poppy does not require a stem or a stick this year.
