Parents as Partners: Reading in Prep

We are thrilled to share the exciting and impactful learning taking place in our Prep classrooms, particularly in the area of reading instruction. As part of our commitment to delivering high-quality, evidence-based education, we would like to invite the Wilston community to learn more about our approach.

Reading is a key component of the Australian Curriculum and a crucial foundation for Literacy development. As students begin their reading journey in Prep, it’s important to understand that, contrary to earlier beliefs, reading is not a natural process—it requires explicit and systematic instruction.

At Wilston State School, we take great pride in our daily, structured approach to teaching reading. Our practice is carefully differentiated to meet the diverse needs of all learners, and it is grounded in the latest research from the Science of Reading.

We warmly invite Prep families to attend our Parents as Partners afternoon on Tuesday, 29 April from 4:30pm – 5:30pm. During this session, we will share how this research is shaping our new reading instruction model for 2025 Prep classes.

Highlights of the session include:

• Exploring the decodable texts our students use as they build foundational reading skills.
• Demonstrations of teaching strategies used to help students recognise letters by name and sound, and decode words to support reading fluency and comprehension.
• An explanation of how our reading materials is now sequenced based on the complexity of the alphabetic code, rather than traditional levelled books.

We will also share strategies you can use at home to support your child’s reading development, nurture a love of books, and reinforce the skills they’re learning in class.

If you are unable to attend, the session will be recorded and a link will be provided for you to watch at your convenience.
