Dear Parents and Carers,
The P&C Association hosted its May meeting last night and it was great to see so many attendees, with some familiar faces and some new faces in attendance. Once again, we had some really open discussions around a range of topics. As principal, I would like to express my appreciation for the ongoing support of the P&C Association at Wilston State School. All the very best to the P&C for a successful Trivia Night on 17th May!
At our assembly today, we had the opportunity to say farewell to our esteemed music teacher, Mrs Miranda Charters. Our choirs gave her the perfect send off with some beautiful performances. I know Mrs Charters appreciated the attendance of so many parents. We wish Mrs Charters all the very best in her new position.

As mentioned on assembly, it is likely that this will be our final whole school assembly in the undercover area. Our next whole school assembly, later this term, will be an opportunity to utilise the new hall for this event. We are all very excited about that.
This morning, it was lovely to see so many students walk to school as part of National Walk to School Day. Shout out to the P&C and Tuckshop for organising the fruit that we are able to give to students on arrival.

Next Wednesday is Under 8's Day at Wilston State School. We look forward to celebrating early childhood play and education with our young students and teachers. Thanks to the teachers involved for organising and hosting this event for the children. On the same day, May 21st, it is also National Simultaneous Storytime, when students and children across the country have the opportunity to share and enjoy the recently published picture book “The Truck Cat” by Deborah Frenkel. It is a beautiful tale. Themes of loneliness, identity and connection are explored through the eyes of Tinka, the Truck Cat. Our teacher Librarian, Mrs Burgess, is very excited about the opportunity to share this story with the school. WE are looking forward to a great 5th week of term 2.
I think that’s all for now. Take care Wilston.
Warm regards,
Michael Sawbridge
Principal

Gala Day
The first of our 3 gala days is next Friday. Can you please ensure that you complete the consent forms online to ensure that your child is able to attend. Unfortunately, with the current state of our oval we have been hampered in our ability to train. Hopefully the constant wet weather will clear to give the oval a chance to dry out and enable training to continue.
GALA DAY SPORT - DOWNLOAD THE SZAPP FOR NOTIFICATIONS

YEAR 1 MAKE AND MELD INCURSION
Year 1 have been learning about natural, managed and constructed features of our environment as part of the HASS curriculum. Students attended an incursion 'Make and Meld' this week.

This morning we acknowledged our wonderful Crossing Supervisors on assembly as part of National Road Safety Week. Thank you for everything you do to keep our community safe on the roads.

We all play a part no matter if you are on foot, two wheels or four wheels.
Enjoy Family Reading in May!
Each May, many organizations and thousands of people celebrate National Families Week. https://nfw.org.au/
This annual event (held 12-18 May in 2025) highlights and promotes the important role that families have in Australian society, particularly in nurturing and educating our children.
This year in our Wilston school community, let’s celebrate by focussing on the positive benefits and joyful experiences of reading together! It is widely accepted that parents reading to and with their children (even after they learn to read themselves) is a wonderful way to bond and share the love of language and literature.
Research shows that there are a multitude of other benefits of reading to children including:
- Building knowledge about phonics and language
- Expanding general and topic-specific knowledge
- Growing listening skills and attention span
- Increasing exposure to new vocabulary used in context
- Developing empathy, values and life lessons
Join in the fun of family reading in May and enter our library competition:
Take a creative photo of some family members reading together and email it to Mrs Burgess smbur1@eq.edu.au by 18 May with a short caption (eg “Our favourite bedtime story is…” or “the Jones family loved reading….)
All submissions will go on display in the library and be entered in a lucky prize draw. You could win a family book voucher to get some lovely new books in our Book Club Issue 4!
Thank you to all the families who have shared their favourite reading moments.
In May, let’s build in more family time to read together!

Year 1 Playdate - postponed
The relentless sunshowers and rainfall we've had over the last couple of weeks means our school has been inundated with water! Sadly, our oval is waterlogged and will not be a good place to play this weekend.
Our Grade 1 playdate has officially been rescheduled to Sunday 8 June 2025.
This may also help some parents who will otherwise be 'resting' on Sunday after our annual WSS Triva Night. Have fun if you will be there and we look forward to seeing you all in a few weeks!
Election Day BBQ and Cake Stall – Thank you!
The Crocs would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported our Election Day BBQ and cake stall!
Whether you donated lovely sweets to sell or assisted on the BBQ, we greatly appreciated everyone’s assistance.
The Crocs would also like to say a big thank you to a now famous Grand Dad who sold his rosella jam on the day and donated all proceeds back to the Crocs!
Fairplay Vouchers
Do you have a Fairplay Voucher which you have not yet used? The Wilston Crocs are a registered activity provider, and Fairplay Vouchers can be redeemed for learn to swim and squads. Be quick though – all round 11 vouchers must be presented to activity providers by the 6th June 2025.
Learn to Swim and Squad
Learn to Swim and Squads are available year-round with the pool heated to 28 degrees. We currently have availability most days in our Term 2 Learn to Swim program with lessons running Monday to Thursday afternoons as well as Saturday mornings.
Please see our website for the complete squad timetable. https://www.wilstonpandc.org.au/swim-club
We also have an adult Squad which runs Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings from 6:00- 7:00am as well as a high school fitness squad which runs Wednesdays 5:30 – 6:30pm.
Swimming year round has many benefits, and we encourage all our squad and learn to swim kids to maintain their skills and swim over the winter months. Please email swim@wilstonpandc.org.au for bookings.
Upcoming Swim Meets
The Crocs will be attending the following meets this term.
Grace Short Course Transition Meet – 31st May
MCA Short Course Preparation Meet – 7th June
Brisbane Jets Short Course Preparation Meet – 22nd June
The Brisbane and Queensland Short Course Championships will bring the winter season to an end in early August. Qualifying times for these two championship meets can be achieved at any of the above meets.
These meets are open to swimmers registered with Swimming Qld as a Youth of Junior Swimmer. All meet entry is through Swim Central, with relevant nomination closing dates for each meet.
If you are not sure which meet is for your child, or if you are unsure of what events to enter, please have a chat with Coach Mark.
See you at the pool!
